Firefox 2 Roadmap (Draft)

We shipped a great release this week, delivering an improved experience across the board from 1.0.x. Thousands of bugfixes, performance/stability/security improvements, and a wide range of user experience-focused changes make Firefox 1.5 a much better browser than Firefox 1.0. There’s hundreds of people who helped make Firefox 1.5 happen, many of whom I’m looking forward to seeing at next week’s Firefox summit. We simply couldn’t make these releases happen without a great community, and great partners like Google and IBM. A huge thanks to everyone who was involved.

That said, we can’t rest on our laurels, we have to look forward to Firefox 2! The recent product roadmap, posted by the indomitable Chris Beard, points to a much more aggressive product cycle. In this vein, we have created a draft roadmap identifying key areas of work for a June 2006 release (which is a tentative date, subject to finalizing the roadmap). Feedback via the discussion page is highly desired.

You should get Rob Strong in on the “In-line spell check” feature if possible – he’s implemented it within the next SpellBound release.

  2. It would be nice if there were a description for each new feature, even if it were just one or two sentences for now. I have no idea what “Platform patch uplift” and “Extension uplift” could mean, and I don’t have a good idea of what “Fully integrated RSS functionality”, “Browser status indication system & UI”, or “Anti-phishing” means.

I am missing provision for software deployment in large organisations. This includes an official MSI package, testing, and perhaps a marketing drive. Right now, things look good for Firefox. MSIE 7 will only support Windows XP (and Vista!), leaving all Windows 2000 shops as potential Firefox users. Even better, the arrival MSIE 7 will start a discussion in the companies. Why do we need to update? How much trouble will it cause? What else can we do? Why not ditch that piece of §#*%$ and get something better?

Sorry for not posting this on the wiki, but I do not want to create an account for just one contribution.

Jesse: Good point. What, you don’t live in our heads? We’ll be adding breakout pages for each feature using a consistent template that will include a description.

  5. Should plugin-version blacklisting (bug 271559) be on that list? It might be useful to look at all the 2.0 blocker nominations and add the ones that look feature-ish to the features list.

Where should we go to suggest ideas on new bookmarks system?

The only ¿feature? of FF1.5 that i hate is the plain box for menus or dialog.
¿Is available an option for use of 3D Box for menues and dialogs?.
